Windows Can Block Sound
A gentleman selected Weatherford Glass to replace the windows in his two-story home. He chose triple-pane windows. Before the window replacement, he could hear people's conversations outside through his upstairs window. After installing triple-pane windows, he couldn't even hear a diesel truck running just outside the windows. It's incredible how much new windows can improve sound deadening.
What is Low-E Glass?
Cardinal Low-E 366 glass is used in most windows on the market today because it has a good balance of clear visibility and solar control.
Low-E (low-emissivity) glass coating allows light to enter but blocks the heat. A Low-E coating can keep the home cool on a hot day by keeping the heat out. The coating also reduces the ultraviolet light entering, protecting carpet, furniture, and artwork from fading. In addition, Low-E glass keeps most indoor heat from escaping through the glass when it's cold outside.
What is SHGC?
Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) measures how much solar energy passes through the window. A higher number means a higher percentage of solar heat passes. Lower numbers are better.
Following are some examples.
- A double-pane window with Low-E glass and Argon gas has an SHGC value of 0.20.
- A triple pane window with Low-E glass and Krypton gas has an SHGC value of 0.17.
Window R-Value Ratings
Windows have R-value ratings. The higher the R-value, the better the energy insulating properties of the window. ​Following are some examples of R-ratings for various window types.
- A single-pane aluminum frame window has an R-value of 1.
- A double-pane aluminum frame window has an R-value of 2.
- A PVC window frame with double-pane glass has an R-value of 3.
- An EnergyCore standard window has an R-4 rating.
- An EnergyCore, triple-pane window has an R-6 rating.
